Spirit Lake, IA (April 6, 2020) Lakes Regional Healthcare urges residents to wear cloth face masks in the presence of others and in public settings such as in grocery stores and pharmacies. Use of face masks is not a substitute for social distancing. Cloth masks help slow the spread of the coronavirus by keeping droplets contained and help people who may unknowingly have the virus from transmitting it to others.

Cloth face masks should be washed frequently, ideally after each use. A washing machine should suffice in properly washing a face mask.

The cloth face masks recommended are not surgical masks or N95 respirators. Surgical masks and N95 respirators are critical supplies that must be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance.
