Federally Declared Disasters

Dickinson County has experienced over sixteen federally declared disasters since 1965, ranging from flooding and severe summer storms to blizzards and ice storms. Out of these declarations, ten have taken place after 2000. The most common form of aid provided through a Major Disaster Declaration is Public Assistance, which offers support to State, Tribal, and local governments as well as certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities.

In cases where there is extensive damage to private properties, FEMA might activate federal Individual Assistance for individuals affected by the disaster. This can include the Individuals and Households Program, Crisis Counseling Program, Disaster Case Management, Disaster Unemployment Assistance, Disaster Legal Services, and Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

You can learn more about the Disaster Declaration Process on the FEMA website.
